The Book of Discipline states that “Each church or charge shall have an organized unit of United Methodist Men.” The purpose of UMM is to declare the centrality of Christ in every man’s life, to promote the effective discipleship, and to model servant leadership of Christ in our daily lives. Several years ago, the UMM Foundation made a decision to support Scouting as a ministry of the local church. Instead of having the community youth just “use the church building”, Scouting is viewed as a vital part of the church’s outreach ministry.
St. Mark has had an active group of UMM for more than five decades. Meetings are held monthly on the first Tuesday of the month. All men of the congregation are encouraged to attend. During the year, a number of service projects in the church and community are planned and executed. For more than forty years, a Pancake Breakfast has been held for the community, and as a fund raiser in the Spring. During the month of November, a Fish Fry honoring local veterans is held. Additionally, contributions are made to Scouting, missionary efforts, and a number of local outreach ministries.
By committing to participation and service, the synergism of the group is enhanced, and the commandment of Christ remains the focus of activities.
